A call for communities across North and Mid Wales to submit their interest to improve local paths and nature
Do you want to put walking at the heart of your community? Ramblers Cymru can help!
As part of our Paths to Wellbeing project, we are looking to give communities across North and Mid Wales the tools and training needed to identify and design new routes and enhance and upgrade existing ones, all with the support of your local Paths to Wellbeing project officer.
We will work together to help promote access to green spaces for members of your local community to enjoy. You can be a core part of this flagship project, gaining a vast range of new skills with expert support and guidance from Ramblers Cymru and partners!
As well as enhancing the walking environment, we will also help nature along the way, with activities such as tree planting, wildflower sowing and wildlife activity days. Not only will you make your community greener for nature to thrive, but it will be a great opportunity to bring the community together with activities for everyone to get involved in! We want to see people of all ages and backgrounds getting involved!
Amanda Hill, the new Mid and North Wales team leader said: “We want to put walking at the heart of our communities. This is a fantastic opportunity to work at a grass-roots level to look at access to walking, to showcase all the amazing environmental benefits this project can bring to communities and for them to highlight all the beautiful places across the country!”
18 communities across Wales will be selected for development, including free training for volunteers, so if you would like to see access and nature improvements where you live, please email
- The name of your community;
- A contact address;
- Name of the lead contact for the group and telephone number;
- Approximate number of volunteers likely to get involved;
- A brief description of why this would benefit your community.
The deadline for submissions is the 15 August 2021.
This project has received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

SLOW WAYS - POSTED 10th June 2021
Full details of Slow Ways can be found HERE.
Fflecsi Bus Services
Posted: March 2nd 2021
Walk leaders note:
A new public transport service - Fleccsi - is now operating, replacing local bus services 19 (between Llanrwst – Cwm Penmachno only) 42, 68A, 68B, 68C, 68D and 70. This covers a substantial area from Llanwrst to Cwm Penmachno, Llyn Brenig and Corwen.
fflecsi operates Monday – Saturday with extensions further south to Corwen three times a week. The service offers a more tailored way of getting about by picking you up and dropping you off in the defined area and not just along a fixed bus route.
Use the fflecsi bus at your request, it will pick you up close to where you will be and change its route so that all other booked passengers can get to where they need to go as well.
To use fflecsi, you need to book in advance using the app, web or by calling 0300 234 0300. You can ensure you arrive at your destination by a certain time, or depart by certain time to make connections with buses/trains or keep appointments you have. You will then be able to see what options are available to you. On the website, some quick links will give you the ability to book and guarantee connections for a selection of bus and train journeys form Llanrwst.
fflecsi is designed to provide greater mobility in rural areas and help people make those essential local journeys in a safe, flexible managed environment.

Combined Walk Programme
The North Wales Area Council meeting on Saturday 6th February decided not to produce a printed Combined Walk Programme for the second half of this year. We would have needed to start collecting the walks in now and there is still too much uncertainty. We are very hopeful that groups walks, following covid guidelines, will be able to restart before the summer but all walks this year will be advertised on the Area and group websites and social media or by the groups themselves. This seemed to work very well, with booking being taken up, in the period after 'Lockdown one'. There will be an Area Newsletter in the summer.

Deganwy Rail Crossing- Victory for a community campaign.
Network Rail closed a well used crossing over the railway line in Deganwy, Conwy in 2011. Following a lengthy legal process, a Welsh Government inspector confirmed in July 2019 that the level crossing on the Llandudno branch line at Tywyn, Deganwy is a public footpath, contrary to the case put forward by Network Rail.
The then Aberconwy MP, Guto Bebb and local councillor Mike Priestley made a claim to have the crossing recognised as having public rights and Ramblers Cymru put forward a case in support. The inspector decided that public rights to access the foreshore on the Conwy estuary already existed when the railway was constructed in the 1850s and had not been extinguished by the building of the railway.
The result of the Inquiry and the Network Rail appeal went in our favour. Having failed in the High Court, Network Rail were refused permission (December 2020) to have the case heard by the Court of Appeal, and there are no further legal challenges that Network Rail can make.
The temporary closure order ends in May 2021 and we are pressing for a speedy reinstatement of the crossing.

Sue Stubbs 1950 – 2021 RIP
Ynys Mon Ramblers Group are so sad to report the death of one of our stalwarts –Sue Stubbs, after a year-long battle with cancer. Sue’s husband John, who passed away 2 years and one day before Sue, was instrumental in forming and running the group path maintenance team since 2006 and alongside John, there was always Sue to support him and carry out the administration required to collate all the statistics and to type up his reports for the committee meetings. When John passed away, we were so grateful that Sue took on his responsibilities and well as procuring tools and safety equipment for the other volunteers.
Unfortunately we will not be able to attend her funeral because of current restrictions which is a great source of sadness to us all as she was much loved by everyone who knew her . To say we will miss her is an understatement but we all feel privileged to have known and worked with her. When we are able to meet up, we will have a wake to say our goodbyes

Good publicity
A footpath claim in Llangollen has had an excellent write up/video in the Daily Post including interviews with local Ramblers.
Also the current issue of the Life in North Wales magazine highlights the benifits of walking. It has a long quote from Ramblers nationally and interviews with three Ramblers from different parts of North Wales about their favoute walks.
Welsh publicity posters from Ramblers Cymru:
These posters can be printed off for displays and publicity. They do not have space for walk details- we are trying to get some with a space to print onto.

Public Inquiries
Lixwm
Bridleway Claim Lixwm, Flintshire. Public Inquiry 2020
A road that has been used by local residents for a very long time was called into question in 1991. The occupier put up fences and a gate across the route. Following protests by local residents the Community Council contacted the Flintshire County Council. They were told that as the route was not on the Definitive Map they could not do anything.
The ownership of the property changed in 1996 and as a result people attempting to walk and cycle the route were being challenged by the new occupiers. Eventually in 2007 the Community Council claimed the route on the 20 year rule. The resulting Public Inquiry where North Wales Area are took on the Claim on behalf of the Community Council has now ruled in our favour.
